And how could incense help you find some smoky serenity? Let us take you on a trip through time as you discover the scents which speak to you from our newest collection of incense!
History of this Smelly Smoke
Incense is composed of naturally aromatic plant materials such as resins, barks, and flowers combined with essential oils to create a substance that emits a fragrant smoke when burned. The word “incense” derives from the Latin word for “to burn.” If the fact that its name came from the ‘dead language’ isn’t indication enough, humans have been burning incense for a very long time.
There is evidence of incense being used by many cultures and religions around the world since antiquity. Incense was found in the tomb of King Tut, used by Babylonians and spread to Greece and Rome for offering prayers to gods, and even used by 14th-century Chinese samurai warriors as a perfume in their armor to achieve an aura of invincibility while they fought! Today, incense is utilized by Native Americans, Buddhists, Hindus, and Catholics alike for its purifying and harmonizing properties. From ancient civilizations to contemporary spirituality, the sweet-smelling secret of incense is out! Burn this beloved substance and discover its magic for yourself!
We go together like... Hippies and Incense
If you identify as a hippie, there is a pretty good chance you've caught a whiff of Patchouli or Nag Champa at a concert, festival, local smoke shop, or your friend's basement. But why is it that hippies are so often associated with the smelly smoke?
Well, the free-spirited love children of the ’60s became fascinated with cultures and spiritualities from around the world. Many took pilgrimages and brought back with them an appreciation of many traditions, including the aromas of incense! Not only does the earthy and pungent odor of Nag Champa, Patchouli, and Sandalwood scents cover up skunky smells, it also provides mental benefits: relaxing the body and mind, getting your spirit in line, and create an atmosphere of positive energy.
The power of incense to influence our mood and atmosphere is huge, and hippies know this! Many famous musicians including Bob Dylan and the Grateful Dead are infamous for burning huge drums of Nag Champa incense to create chill vibes during their concerts (Deadheads- check out our Grateful Dead inspired scents!). No matter the mood you want to create, there is a scent of smoke for you!
